In many cases, "topsoil" is manufactured by sifting Missoula dirt & Bitterroot dirt materials that are dropped off by area homeowners, landscapers, or excavation contractors. In ideal (and more rare) cases, topsoil is the "top" few inches of native & undisturbed soil that develops naturally over many years. The Flathead Valley (especially around Creston, MT) is well know for its virgin topsoil.

In our area (Missoula, Bitterroot & Flathead Valleys) it can sometimes be difficult to find a “native” or “virgin” topsoil product that performs well if you plan to planting into it directly. Amending local topsoil with compost will give your young seeds the best chance. To make things really easy for lawns and landscaped areas we offer an enriched topsoil product that is available in Missoula and the Bitterroot. For gardening, we recommend one of our garden soils, in place of topsoil.
