Topsoil is standard screened soil that provides structure, weight, and volume - ideal for filling low spots, leveling lawns, or building up sub-layers before sod installation. Compost is decomposed organic matter packed with micro-nutrients and biology necessary to feed plants. A garden soil blend combines soil and compost together, providing the fertility and drainage needed for raised beds, planters, and vegetable gardens in a ready-to-use product.
We recommend a garden soil blend (with a tested soil to compost ratio) for raised beds and planters. Planting into 100% compost can be too dense and high in active nutrients for young roots. Straight compost is best used as a 1- to 3-inch top layer (amendment) mixed into existing native garden beds or spread over lawns.
